Bulgaria is a hiker's paradise with 5 mountain ranges, 3 national parks, many other reserves, rivers and lakes, as well as the Black Sea coast. You'll find you have much more freedom to just wander across open countryside here, though the downside to that is that footpaths are sometimes not clearly marked, or have become disused and overgrown. You can buy maps of different regions with major footpaths marked, and also a guide to the many hiker's huts dotted across the land (pictured right).

For local walks I've found Google Earth invaluable as you can see existing paths quite clearly, so with that in mind I've added screenshots of some of the walks I've done.
