RIVER YANTRA & NORTH RIDGE

This walk heads out east from the village past a pink building which I'm told was once a munitions factory before being converted to produce biofuel. The route crosses fields before heading downhill to meet the river Yantra. In spring or after heavy rain, the water flows rapidly around a sharp bend surrounded by forests. Keep following the path which eventually heads away from the river before turning sharp left and climbing up through woodland full of spring flowers. As you walk along you might notice a rather formidable looking property down in the valley to the right, complete with lookout tower. The path reaches a rocky area where you head left and downhill to where a little stream, full of cascades, crosses the track. Stay on this path as it turns right and heads uphill again. Watch out for a gap in the shrubs on the left where you enter more open land. You'll then come to a place where the track splits - continuing forwards or turning left uphill - turn left here. The climb can be quite arduous but once you get higher you can actually look back up the valley to see the village of Vetrintsi and may even see distant lorries passing along the Sofia-Veliko Tarnovo highway. The path wends its way up to then follow the ridge back towards Gostilitsa with views of Buzluzha and the Shipka Monument in the distance, as well as amazing views of the Stara Planina mountains. Looking down you can see the river Yantra where you were earlier and get a good idea of just how high you've climbed. As you near the village you'll past long stone water troughs on your right (and unfortunately a huge rubbish dump on the left) before then turning left and making your way downhill across fields back towards the pink building.  Distance 9km.
