GARDEN CENTRES

You can buy plants at the fruit and veg markets and from many supermarkets, DIY shops and high street stores, but here are some of the more specialised suppliers.

MORGAN'S PLANTS

Based in Hotnitsa this garden centre is run by David and Graham who have over 30 years horticultural experience. They raise the vast majority of their stock themselves but also make trips back to the UK for more specialist items. Their plants/shrubs/trees are extremely good value and chosen for the climate here. If you need any advice on suitable plants for your garden or caring for them, they are always pleased to help.

BALKAN ECOLOGY PROJECT

Based in the village of Shipka, the Balkan Ecology Project aims to develop people's understanding of permaculture and how to grow plants without the use of commercially produced chemicals whilst still maximising outcome. They sometimes have open days where you can look around all their current projects and get advice on things like companion planting, soil improvement, disease prevention etc. You can buy plants direct from them or order things to be delivered by courier.

PLANTING CALENDAR

Here is a useful guide to when to plant veggies in this region. Many websites are based on US hardiness zones, and for this I think we're something like zone 8a (average winter minimum temperatures of -12 to -9 degrees celsius. Your neighbours of course will be only too willing to pass along their advice and wisdom.
