Kalofer
Kalofer is a small town on the southern side of the Stara Planina mountain range, and is known as the birth place of poet and revolutionary Hristo Botev. Set amidst beautiful countryside there are many opportunities for hikes in the locality, including into the mountains themselves, with ecotrails and pony treking available. The town itself currently has three museums and several churches including the big Archangel Michael church with its yellow walls and arches clearly visible on the hillside overlooking the village.
There are several festivals which take place here but possibly the biggest is on 6th January each year when literally hundreds of men and boys gather to step into the icy waters of the river Tundzha and make their way along to join in a huge horo dance. People come from all over the country to watch and take part, so be prepared to arrive before 7am if you want to be in with a chance of getting a good vantage point along the river bank.
